Hip Hop Online: September 2011

When the phrase Hip Hop comes up in conversation, what do you think? Do you think about all the cocky, party, or love songs that are always playing on the radio? Are you thinking that Hip Hop is just about the superficial side of life? If you aren't very familiar with the genre completely, these are probably some of the things you think about the culture. Actually, many of the best Hip Hop songs are much more meaningful than anything that ever plays on the radio. People don't believe this because all they see is the advertised version of Hip Hop music.

Compare a real lyrical and emotional Hip Hop song to a radio single and you would probably think it is a totally different music genre. The meaningful music in the genre is usually created by the artists that decide not to try and get on the radio. Instead, they do it for the sake of art instead of the sake of fame. A lot of the deepest artists don't even get to the fame level that many 'radio style' artists do.

The theme of the real Hip Hop songs are much different than the hedonistic views heard on radio singles. Some of the best songs have topics like sad stories (Eminem's Stan and Tupac's Brendas Got A Baby), drug problems and family issues (Joe Budden's Calm Down and various Eminem tracks), and cultural problems (Tupac's Changes). The radio on the music and this style of music seems like a completely different genre. The best rappers put real messages into their music and act more like poets. The roots of Hip Hop music show how deep Hip Hop should be.

Some great examples of artist's that produce this kind of music most of the time are Joe Budden, DMX, Nas, Common, Kanye West, and Eminem. Tupac is usually crowned the king of this style of music, and many of his most popular songs are some of the deepest songs in Hip Hop. While these artists have dropped mainstream hits that lack a message, the majority of the music they create is deep and emotional. The normal songs that you hear from these artists on the radio aren't the songs that I'm talking about. Don't judge these artists by the radio. Judge them from their complete album content. Albums are the real way to see if an artist really has something real to say or not.

The radio has changed what Hip Hop means to a lot of people unfamiliar with the whole genre. That is why a lot of people have said that Hip Hop music is dead over the last couple of years. If you look at Hip Hop as a book, people are judging it by its cover. Remember that next time you start to question the value of Hip Hop music.

Gangs and Hip Hop music has always been affiliated in conversations about both. A lot of people believe that Hip Hop is completely responsible for the rise in gang violence since Hip Hop was founded. A lot of people even believe that all the popular Hip Hop artists are, or were, in a gang. While Hip Hop lyrics and gang activity have been linked together over the years, they are not as closely related as some may think. The Game, Lil Wayne, and Snoop Dogg are a few of the very popular mainstream artists that do actually have ties with street gangs.

Gangs are usually blamed for most of the violence in the inner cities in America. The most significant gangs exist in large cities and usually include people of minority backgrounds. The Rap industry mostly includes musicians that are in a minority ethnic background. Gang members often listen to Hip Hop and dress in the urban clothing style, which is what Hip Hop musicians usually wear. Hip Hop has produced many songs that are considered violent. Does this mean that Hip Hop music and gangs are directly related?

Gangs have been established many times before anybody ever thought of Hip Hop. So, how would Hip Hop be responsible for gang activity at all? Some people will argue that Rap music have evolved gangs into something even more violent than before. However, I do not believe that the music created by popular artists influences any gang activity. Some artists do display gang affiliation within their music though.

A lot of the mainstream artists lived in the ghettos as children. Most of their lives have been influenced by street gangs in some way or another. Emcees have the tendency to portray their life story on an instrumental. If they lived in the ghetto, then they are definitely going to talk about the things they did, and seen, when they lived there.

Rap music gets an unfair blame when it comes to violent crimes performed in the inner city. In reality, Hip Hop has nothing to do with what goes on in the streets. It may talk about violent crimes but that doesn't make people commit them. The blame should never be placed on music. Call Of Duty displays war scenes and violent acts in the video games. So, why isn't Call of Duty blamed for every war? I hope that analogy paints a clearer picture for all those that still don't believe.
