Hip Hop Online: August 2011

Since the 90's, Hip Hop has been a top selling music genre when it comes to albums. This new generation in Hip Hop isn't in the same boat though. Every once in a while, a mainstream album will top the charts, but it doesn't happen as often as it used to. A lot of people have theories why this is happening. However, there many be many other reasons that you never even thought of. This article will discuss each of the important reasons that sales are declining in this great music genre.

A main reason for declining record sales is the lack of creativity in new music. During the golden era of Rap music, artists came out with new topics, new rhymes, new styles, and won over the hearts of many Rap heads. Until the new century, Hip Hop was constantly blossoming into new music. Today, Rap has lost its innovation and in turn, lost many dedicated fans. Do we blame the followers or the musicians? Where has the creativity gone? Hip Hop has become generic and those that follow the lead are the only ones that get on the radio. Why buy a new album if the last album you bought has a different artist saying the same exact thing?

One of the most obvious reasons that sales are declining is because of the internet. The internet has produced a huge amount of illegal acquisition of Rap music. There is no doubt that the internet has significantly hurt album sales. Why pay when you can get it free? it has hurt the music industry as a whole, not just the Rap scene.

What effect does this all have on Hip Hop music? A lot of record labels have given up and dropped from the spotlight. Musicians are trying to make more music to make up for the fact that they are now getting much less profit per album. Upcoming artists don't do very well unless they follow whoever is popular at the moment. The creativity was left in the golden era and new emcees are just trying to live their dream by selling out. Fans don't want to pay for the same topics covered by other artists so they get the music for free instead. The cycle keeps repeating and the music world gets even lower.

Is there any way that the fans of Rap can revert the game back to the golden age? Piracy will never stop, no matter how much we would like it to. What we can do, is support the artist putting out real music and prove to the artists that being totally mainstream isn't the only way to get sales. The content quality will come back eventually and we may see Hip Hop rise again to a new golden era. Rap may not be dead yet, but it is heading down the path to its own funeral.
